Karen Maiolo
— Karen Maiolo —
With a deep-rooted familiarity for the places she depicts, Karen Maiolo explores the pristine landscape that surrounds her home in Banff National Park. Her ongoing pursuit of landscapes without horizon lines often suggest the delicate balance between what is abstract and what is representational painting. Many of the paintings using juxtaposing images, and Maiolo skilfully collapses the images into each other. Maiolo applies a repetitive process of editing the subject followed by adding layers of oil paint. Maiolo’s connection to landscape transcends the physical, in search of a depiction that is deeper and more thought-provoking; she includes memories and emotional connection in her work.
