Spotlight on Carl White: "Qualia"
Artist Statement “Qualia”
Qualia (emergence)
The collection of paintings is the culmination of a slow letting go.
The work had its genesis in an exhibition several years ago called “Koan”
The Koan is a zen riddle meant to provoke the great doubt in the practitioner - I
Began to question the act of painting and the illusion of surface(image)
Through various destructive means such as marking and breaking the skin of canvas.
The breakdown of the subject and object began to reveal a deeper pursuit that lay at the heart of both
My life and work. The ontological inquiry into being.
What is it to be?
What is it to be alive?
These questions are what has truly lay at the heart of my work since I was a boy.
The quest to understand the what? And why? Of life.
In philosophy of mind “qualia” are defined as individual instances of subjective conscious experience.
“… the pain of a headache, the taste of wine, and the redness of an evening sky.”
As qualitative characters of sensation, qualia stand in contrast to propositional attitudes where focus is on beliefs
About experience rather than what it is directly like to be experiencing.
I am in search of the experience of experience… the sound of your movement
